Corona Geek #90 – Hacking The Hackathon – Pro Tips from Hackathon Warriors
During this week’s Corona Geek Hangout we talked with Corona Ambassadors, Jennifer Looper and Dr. Brian Burton about the importance of participating in hackathons. Both developers have extensive experience in the hackathon space and they shared Pro tips around what to expect, how to participate, and how to get the most out of every event.
Jen has participated in numerous events as a participant, an organizer, and even a judge. She likes participating in HackFit, a fitness-infused startup competition for innovative thinkers passionate about healthy living. Dr. Burton has organized Global Game Jam events in Abilene ensuring his students have a chance to participate in local hackathon events. We compare notes between Jen and Brian to learn all we can about getting the most out of hackathons.
Recently Theo Rushin Jr. and his team won a $10,000 1st Place Grand Prize at the AT&T Mobile App Hackathon for Public Safety & Emergency Preparedness. They built two apps using Corona SDK in just 48 hours. One app enables the user to quickly and silently send out a group SMS through Parse.com Cloud Code and Twillio. The second app shows a map view of all the users who have sent the SMS message. The combo makes up a public safety app that the judges and various emergency personal (at the event) said would be of great benefit to many users and could possibly help to save lives. Way to go Theo!!!
